For one reason or another several sessions have not been as well supported as they should. The Saturday morning swim running from 08.00 – 09.00am for Yellow, Red and Green swimmers has spare capacity. The same is true for the later Blue, Silver and Gold squads. There is also the provision for small pool swimmers to attend a second session. It is a simple fact that more practice equals faster progress. Check the notice board to see when a second session is available.
The date for this popular annual event has as yet not been confirmed but it seems likely that it may well be the new year before it will take place. Newry and Mourne who host the event are having some difficulty booking their pool. Swimmers born 2001, 2002,2003, 2004 and younger are eligible to compete and the cost will be £2.50 per stroke. As well as being an enjoyable gala the event also gives junior swimmers the opportunity to obtain new PB’s. Those interested should enquire at the club desk for more information. Snacks and suitable drinks will need to be brought. Many of our current senior swimmers started off by competing in the Arthur McDonald gala! We will confirm the gala date as soon as possible.
The PTL team got their season off to a great start last night at the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre defeating Ballymoney 607 points to 521 in what was a friendly but competitive gala. As always, the opening medley relays provided an opportunity for both teams to size up the opposition and with Portadown completing a ‘clean sweep’ in all age groups early signs were encouraging. Despite several excellent individual swims from the home team Portadown were always too strong, once ahead they never looked like they could be caught. The team looked good throughout all age groups as both the boys and girls continued to pick up points in the individual events. The gala finished with the freestyle relays where Portadown lost only one race. A big thanks to all who took part including several swimmers who were competing at this level for the first time. Thanks is also due to hosts Ballymoney for their hospitality after the event. The next fixture sees the team back on board the coach for a second away trip to Limavady. In the meantime coaches will have the opportunity to study the results in more detail and let’s see who produced a new PB. All sessions run as normal this week.
The opening gala of the season takes place on Saturday with an away trip to Ballymoney. The team coach will leave Cascades at 3.30pm and warm-up is scheduled for half past five. For those who may wish to travel by car Ballymoney swim in the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre . We have faced Ballymoney several times over the years and if all goes to form it should be an exciting gala. Let’s do our best to get off to a winning start!
